Turbine Tree

Here I used live and historical data to show the variability of wind energy supply reflected in the colour of christmas tree lights. The tree opens by quickly replaying the last 24hrs of data, then showing live power output of the Lancaster University wind turbine. I used signalR libraries and bit of Jquery magic to change the colour of a div behind an SVG graphic with transparent “lights”. ISS kindly provides the data stream.

See it live at: http://www.catalystproject.org.uk/turbine-tree-merry-christmas/

There was also an actual tree in the Foyer of InfoLab21, with red and green lights that we built to show the same effect. A Raspberry Pi python script handles connecting to live data and controlling the relative intensity of red and green lights.
